At approximately 11:52 AM on Friday, April 10, 2015, a motorcyclist was stuck by a vehicle at the intersection of 122nd Avenue and Starkey Road in Largo.

Crews from Seminole Fire Rescue Department and Sunstar Paramedics were dispatched to the scene. Arriving units located the motorcyclist who was ejected and lying on the side of the roadway.  Additional units from Largo Fire Rescue, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) were dispatched to assist on-scene.  Multiple bystanders and witnesses rendered aid to the rider prior to the arrival of first responders.

According to a press release by Sergeant Steve Gaskins of the Florida Highway Patrol, the motorcyclist has been identified as 38 year-old Dennis Michael Soroka of Largo.  Troopers report that Soroka was traveling on a 2007 KTM motorcycle southbound at a high rate of speed on Starkey Road approaching the intersection of 122nd Avenue North.

Janet D. Marvin, age 77 of Largo, was traveling in a 2001 Toyota Corolla northbound on Starkey Road in the left turn lane approaching the intersection of 122nd Avenue North. Marvin proceeded to make a left turn through the intersection to travel west onto 122nd Avenue North as Soroka entered the intersection and collided with the Toyota.

Soroka, despite wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, sustained critical injuries and was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where he later died.  Marvin was transported to Morton Plant Hospital with minor injuries.

This is the second motorcyclist death in the past few days under very similar circumstance in Largo.  Witnesses at both scenes report the motorcyclists traveling at a very high rate of speed striking a vehicle turning left into their lane of travel.  The report from FHP indicates that no charges are pending.
