Driver Fleeing Crash Sets off Chain Reaction in Safety Harbor

Posted: December 20, 2014 – 9AM

At approximately 6 PM on Friday, December 19, 2014, 37 year-old Shawn Glode of Oldsmar set off a chain reaction crash while attempting to flee the scene.  The crash occurred on McMullen Booth Road just to the south of Curlew Road.

According to investigators from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, the 37 year-old Glode was traveling northbound on McMullen Booth Road in his 2005 Ford F150 when he struck the rear of a 2002 Audi driven by 62 year-old John Kroll of Tarpon Springs. Deputies say at the time of the crash, the Audi was in motion and was slowing down due to traffic. Both vehicles were stopped in the roadway when Glode backed up and changed lanes to the right -striking the Audi a second time on the driver’s side rear quarter panel as it was fleeing from the scene.

Glode accelerated and continued northbound and then struck the rear of a Dodge 1500 driven by 49 year-old Nashaat Malak of Palm Harbor that was stopped in the outside left turn lane of McMullen Booth at Curlew Road.  Deputies say this was a high-speed impact that caused a chain reaction pushing Malak’s 2005 Dodge 1500 into a blue Honda Accord driven by 35 year-old Max Atkinson of Palm Harbor and a silver Honda driven by 67 year-old William Blanton of Safety Harbor. The silver Honda then went into a 2009 VW Tiguan driven by 47 year-old Tamberly Brockman of Palm Harbor. All of these vehicles were stopped in the outside left turn lane.

Deputies say Glode’s Ford came to final rest against a fence off the east side of McMullen Booth Road.

Brockman  was transported to Mease Dunedin Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Glode  and Malak were transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital for treatment of more serious injuries but none considered life threatening.

Investigators say impairment may be a factor in the crash.  Glode has been arrested for his role in this crash.  He has previously been charged in Pinellas County with careless driving, driving without insurance, driving with a suspended license and driving a vehicle with an expired registration.

The investigation continues.
