Duke Energy suspends late payment charges, estimated bills and disconnections during Florida storm restoration

Duke Energy today announced that it is suspending late payment charges and estimated bills for its 1.8 million Florida customers as it continues to restore power in the state.

The company continues its suspension of non-payment disconnections, which was implemented at the beginning of the storm.

“We are all-hands-on-deck with restoration, and stopping these actions gives customers one less thing to worry about. It allows Duke Energy to focus on what’s important – getting the lights on and helping rebuild communities and lives,” said Harry Sideris, Duke Energy Florida president.

Original Post
IONTB has received copies on statements showing that Duke Energy has estimated energy usage for many customers.

These estimations reflect a usage which is approximately three times the usual utilization by those customers.

It primarily is affecting customers that were due to have their meter read during the approach of Hurricane Irma.

No comment has been received from Duke Energy but one customer was instructed over the phone to pay the bill in full.  Customers were told that it will be corrected with next month’s meter reading.

IONTB recommends contacting Duke Energy to provide them with the actual meter reading for a more accurate bill.  In addition, instruct them to not debit your electronic payment method you may have on file.

Hopefully, Duke Energy will not debit customers accounts with the erroneous amount leading to possible overdraft situations.
