Man Dies After Being Thrown From Car That Crashed into Guardrail in St. Petersburg Saturday Night

St. Peterburg Police investigators responded to a crash Saturday night on Gandy Blvd just east of I-275.

The crash, that claimed the life of 26 year-old Maurice La’Trail Wheeler, occurred at about 10 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017.

According to St. Petersburg Police, Wheeler was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo westbound on Gandy Boulevard approaching the I-275 overpass at a high rate of speed.

Wheeler was reportedly in the left median lane and swerved to the right when he encountered slower moving traffic.  This resulted in Wheeler losing control of the Monte Carlo which left the roadway and struck a guardrail.

Wheeler was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.  He was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where he died at 2:47 a.m.
