Suspect Arrested After Bank Robbery At Grow Financial in Pinellas Park

May 9, 2014 Shortly before 5:30pm on Friday evening, the Pinellas Park Police Department was alerted to a possible bank robbery in progress.  The holdup alarm originated from the Grow Financial Credit Unit at 6900 Park Blvd in the City of Pinellas Park. Units arrived quickly and the suspect was arrested with the assistance of a K9 and the “Eagle” from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.  Just prior to 6pm, units from Pinellas Park Fire Department and Sunstar were dispatched to evaluate the suspect who received very deep bite wounds from the tracking K9.  The suspect was apprehended in the area of 70th Avenue and 67th Way and was transported to a local hospital for additional medical care. A lone male suspect entered the bank and set a bag on the teller counter and told the teller that the bag contained a bomb and then demanded money from the teller.  The teller gave the man an undisclosed amount of money and he fled the bank, on foot, east from the location. Shift supervisors allocated resources to the bank and called for assistance from detectives, Tampa P.D. bomb squad and K-9 units. The sheriff’s office was also contacted and provided aviation support.  K-9 Officer G.D. Weaver, and his K-9 partner Tank, quickly picked up the trail of the suspect and apprehended him a short distance from the bank. The subject was injured during his apprehension as he was taken down by Tank. The injuries were limited to puncture wounds and lacerations to his legs. The suspect did resist Officer Weaver and his K-9 partner, which contributed to the extent of his injuries. An undisclosed amount of money was recovered at the apprehension location. The Tampa bomb squad deployed their resources into the bank and retrieved the suspect device. The device was taken to an isolated area of the bank property and detonated.  An inspection of the bag

that contained the device revealed the device was actually an alarm clock wrapped with a television antenna. The FBI responded to the scene, and at the time of this release, is interviewing the suspect with members of the Pinellas Park Police Department. Federal charges are expected.

All lanes of Park Blvd between Belcher Road and 66th Street were closed during the examination and inactivation of the suspicious package.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Pinellas Park Police Department continue their investigation. The suspect has been identified as CARMINE JAMES MACEDONIO, age 22 of New Port Richey. Additional information will be posted when available.
