Nearby Shooting Sends Three Tarpon Springs Schools into Precautionary Lockout

The Tarpon Springs Police communications center received a call on Friday, February 23, 2018 at approximately 8:45 a.m. of a shots fired call at 300 S. Florida Avenue (Sunset Shores Association Residential Units).

Officers responded to the location and discovered that a male had sustained an apparent gunshot wound to his person.

The victim is employed by a landscape contractor and was performing grounds maintenance duties at the time of the incident.

The victim was working at the west area of the property, in the vicinity of a pool when he was shot. Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue responded to the location and transported the victim to a local trauma center.

At this time there are several officers and detectives at the incident location conducting an investigation.

There is no known description of the suspect at this time and it is not known where the gunfire originated from at the location.

As a precaution the following area schools were placed on a LOCKOUT status:

Tarpon Springs High School (1411 Gulf Rd.)

Tarpon Springs Middle School (501 N. Florida Ave.)

Sunset Hills Elementary School (1347 Gulf Rd.)

There is no evidence at this time suggesting that this incident is related to any school activities and the LOCKOUT procedure has been implemented as a precaution only.

The lockout of Tarpon Springs High School, Tarpon Springs Middle School and Sunset Hills Elementary School was discontinued as of 10:40 a.m.

There have no further developments regarding the shooting investigation.
