Teen arrested after 16-year-old dead in Clearwater shooting incident

Clearwater Police detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred earlier this afternoon at approximately 4:13 p.m. on Tuesday, January 30, 2024.

On Thursday, the Clearwater Police announced that homicide detectives have arrested 16-year-old Yerney Arvelo, who has been charged with manslaughter and violation of probation in connection with the death of Jacques Ford.

Ford was shot inside an apartment in the 1200 block of Engman Street. He was transported to Morton Plant Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Arvelo, who lived at the apartment where the shooting occurred, says the two were “play fighting,” according to witnesses. That’s when witnesses said Arvelo picked up a gun, and the weapon went off during the physical exchange, striking the victim.

Detectives continue to investigate the case. Additional charges may be forthcoming.
