16 Year-old Charged with First Degree Murder in the Shooting Death of a Bicyclist in Pinellas Park
44 year old John Chesterfield Asch of Kenneth City died on Wednesday. It was just a few days after being shot while bicycling in Pinellas Park.
On Monday, October 23, 2017 at approximately 7:00 p.m., Pinellas Park Police patrol units responded to the 6600 block of 62nd Avenue North to assist fire department personnel in reference to what was reported as a bicycle accident.
The adult male bicyclist was transported from the scene to the hospital Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for treatment.
Investigating officers were later notified by the hospital that Ash had suffered a single gunshot wound.
Through intense investigative work, Pinellas Park Police Detectives were able to identify the shooting suspect as 16 year-old Jason Olivo-Smith. Olivo-Smith made contact with Asch at the convenience store located at the corner of 66th Street and 62nd Ave.
During this time, Olivo-Smith gave Asch some money for what is believed to be the purpose of buying him beer. Asch rode away on his bike with the money heading westbound on 62nd Ave N.
Olivo-Smith chased Asch on his bicycle and then shot him in the head with his handgun. Asch initially survived the shooting but died two days later.
Detectives were able to locate Olivo-Smith this afternoon at approximately 2:50 p.m. and now have him in custody.
Jason Allen Olivo-Smith will be booked into the Pinellas County Juvenile Assessment Center (JAC) with the charge of First Degree Murder.
