Vehicle Crash on Indian Rocks Causeway Leaves Two Injured

Posted: April 8, 2015 – 9:15 PM

At approximately 5:00 PM on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 units from Pinellas Suncoast Fire & Rescue District (PSFRD), Seminole Fire Rescue Department, Sunstar Paramedics and Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a traffic crash on the Indian Rocks Bridge.

First arriving crews found a heavy damaged vehicle and arranged for additional units to respond in order to free an entrapped woman.  Her injuries led paramedics to declare a trauma alert and request a helicopter for her transport to a trauma center.  Bayflite was dispatched and landed on the east side of the bridge.

In a press release from Sgt Elizabeth Brady of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the heavily damaged 2013 Nissan Altima has been identified as 69 year-old Mary Thomas of Belleair.

According to Deputies, Thomas was traveling westbound over the Indian Rocks Causeway and struck the right concrete barrier. The Altima then rebounded toward the median side swiping a 2013 Buick Verano driven by 66 year-old Indian Shores resident, Lance Ware.

Both vehicles then traveled through the median where the Altima struck a tree.  The Buick came to rest in the eastbound lanes of the Indian Rocks Causeway.

The drivers of both vehicles were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

The investigation continues.
