Truck Lands Upside Down in Tampa Bay After Hydroplaning on Howard Frankland Bridge

A Largo man was pulled from Tampa Bay after his Toyota Tacoma hydroplaned on the wet southbound lanes entering Pinellas County after crossing the main hump of the Howard Frankland Bridge.

Gordon Bechtold, age 26 of Largo, was traveling southbound on I-275 near the 33 milepost in the inside lane and attempted to changed to the center right lane.

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol say that as he changed lanes, the vehicle hydroplaned, rotated to the outside grass shoulder, overturned, traveled over the adjacent barrier wall and entered Tampa Bay.

He was able to exit the partially submerged vehicle and was assisted out of the water by fellow motorists.

He was transported by ambulance to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with minor injuries.
