Grandmother Charged with DUI Manslaughter After Death of Her Grandchild

A 10 month-old child, Harlem Mention, is dead following a crash in which he was on his grandmother’s lap during a crash.

His grandmother, 50 year-old Helen Mention, is now facing charges of DUI Manslaughter, Aggravated Manslaughter of a Child, Careless Driving and a violation of Florida’s Child Restraint Law.

The crash occurred on Friday, October 25, 2019 at approximately 9:06 a.m. at the I-4 westbound on-ramp from Mango Road.

Mention was operating a grey 2001 Nissan Ultima with 10 month-old Harlem on her lap. She was traveling northbound on Mango Road to westbound I-4. As she proceeded to turn on the westbound ramp to I-4, she collided with the inside guardrail.

Both were transported to Tampa General Hospital. Troopers say that her blood alcohol level was 0.225, nearly three times the legal limit.

Harlem died as a result of his injuries on October 28, 2019.

Helen Mention was arrested today and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail.
