First degree murder charges following the shooting stabbing death in St. Petersburg

The St. Petersburg Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting in the 3524 4th Ave. S. Officers responded to the scene after receiving a call at approximately 5:28 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 of a person shot.

Officers responded and found 29 year-old Mitchell Collins critically injured. He was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect, later identified as 26 year-old James Chin of St. Petersburg, left the scene but was located by officers and detained.

Police say that Collins and Chin were friends, but got into a physical altercation at Collins residence on 4th Ave S. During the fight, Chin stabbed Collins with a knife in the neck to both the right and left shoulder areas.  When Collins attempted to flee the apartment, investigators say that Chin followed him and shot him in the right knee.

Chin was arrested and charged with first degree murder in the stabbing and shooting death of Collins.
