Clearwater Police are on scene of a crash on State Road 580 where a Toyota car went into a pond just east of McMullen Booth Road.
The call came in just after 8 a.m. on Saturday, February 13, 2021. The vehicle was traveling westbound when it went out of control and into the pond. The vehicle struck and damaged a utility pole before crashing through a fence on the north side of State Road 580.
All westbound lanes of State Road 580 remained closed until approximately 3:15 p.m. during the investigation.
Members of the rapid dive team entered the water in attempts to rescue any possible occupants still in the vehicle. The divers encountered near zero visibility conditions and were unable to access the vehicle’s interior. Attempts were made to pull the vehicle from the pond by utilizing one of the fire apparatus on-scene. Additional assistance was requested from Clearwater Towing.
As of 10:10 a.m., the vehicle was removed from the pond. One body, that of an adult male, has been recovered at the scene. Divers spend several hours searching the pond to confirm there were no other occupants in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The driver has been identified as 22 year-old Luis Angel Alvarado Correa of Wimauma. He was driving a 2015 Toyota Camry westbound on State Road 580 when he lost control, hit the curb and veered into the pond. The vehicle came to rest upside down in about 8 feet of water. There were no other occupants.
