Murder suspect in custody after three people shot dead at a home off Emerson Avenue in St. Petersburg

Officers from the St. Petersburg Police were dispatched to a home at 2968 Emerson Avenue at approximately 4 p.m. on Tuesday, February 16, 2021.

Initial reports indicated that multiple people have been shot inside a residence and that the suspect and victims remained in the home.

One victim was able to exit the home and contact police about the shooting. She was transported from the scene to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries, according to police.

At approximately 4:50 p.m. SWAT members took the suspect into custody without incident.

Police evacuated the nearby homes and sent in the swat team. They knocked down the front wall of the house in order to get to the victims.

When SWAT members entered the home, they found three adults deceased. A 2 year-old inside the home was transported to the hospital for evaluation but believed to be unharmed.

The suspect was identified as 31 year-old Cornelius “Cornbread” Trevion Whitfield.

Whitfield had a warrant for arrest as a suspect in the murder of 31 year-old Darren Lorenzo Barnes, Jr. and the attempted murder of another man. That shooting occurred on Tuesday, February 2rd, shortly after midnight at the Emerald Pointe Apartments located at 175 73rd Avenue North.

The St. Petersburg Police Department has identified the three victims as
Patricia Ann Whitfield Sharpe (Subject’s grandmother) Age 66
Sallie Hobbs Whitfield (Subject’s great grandmother) Age 83
Antonio Maurice Graham (Subject’s uncle) Age 45

Police say that Patricia and Sallie lived at the home. Antonio did not live at the home.

Whitfield is now facing 4 charges of murder and multiple charges of attempted murder.
