Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) continue to investigate a crash that killed one of the occupants in a vehicle. The crash occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, 2021.
An 18 year-old, operating an SUV, was traveling traveling eastbound on Gandy Boulevard North just west of Oak Street Northeast in the left lane. A second vehicle was traveling westbound on Gandy Boulevard North in the left lane.Â
The front left tire of the SUV suffered a mechanical failure and separated from the vehicle causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The SUV traveled left across the median and into the path of the sedan resulting in a collision between the two vehicles.Â
Upon impact, the rear passengers, a 47-year-old grandfather and a 14-day-old infant, were ejected from the vehicle. The grandfather suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash while the infant, seated in a child seat that was not restrained within the vehicle, suffered minor injuries.Â
According to Troopers, the 22-year-old parents in the sedan and the driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries.
