Officers from the Tarpon Springs Police Department were dispatched to a motorcycle crash on
southbound US Highway 19 south of Beckett Way on Wednesday September 8th, 2021 at approximately 11:15 p.m.
On arrival, officers discovered one severely injured male motorcycle rider and another fatally injured male motorcyclist.
Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue treated the severely injured male and transported him via ambulance to Bayonet Point Medical Center.
The other male was pronounced dead on scene. His next of kin has been notified and he was identified as 28 year old Carlos Candelario of Riverview, Florida.
Officers from the Tarpon Springs Police Department Traffic Homicide investigation unit responded and are investigating the cause of the crash.
Information provided to investigators was a large group of motorcycles were traveling southbound on US 19 heading to Tampa. For unknown reasons the motorcycle Candelario was operating swerved into another southbound motorcycle causing both motorcycles to go down. Candelario was ejected from the motorcycle and suffered fatal traumatic injuries.
At this point it does not appear speed, alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. Candelario was wearing a helmet, but it may not have been properly secured and it appears it may have come off during the crash.
Police say that a third motorcycle appears to have also gone down, but left the scene prior to officers arrival.
The investigation is ongoing at this point.
