Sperm Whale is euthanized after beaching itself on Madeira Beach
Early this morning authorities were alerted to a large whale on the shores of Madeira Beach. The whale appeared close to the 132nd Ave beach access just to the north of John’s Pass.
The whale appeared ill and malnourished. After being examined by Veterinarians, it was determined that the animal would need to be humanely euthanized. Crews waited hours for the tide to recede so they could more safely approach the whale.

The body was towed to a location where a necropsy could be conducted to help determine why the whale washed ashore.
