Officers from the St. Petersburg Police responded to an armed domestic related incident at a home in St. Petersburg at approximately 3:07 a.m. on Monday, September 12, 2022.
The incident occurred at 4533 20th Avenue North in St. Petersburg.
Jill Kiley called officers to the home and reported at her son 31 year-old Cody Kiley was threatening her and her 4 year-old granddaughter with her own handgun. The 4 year-old was identified as Cody’s daughter.
Jill locked herself into a bathroom in the home prior to the officer’s arrival. Officers located Cody in the backyard of the home. Officer Stephen York released his K-9 Loki as officers encountered Cody with the handgun. According to officers, Cody did not drop the handgun despite commands from officers and the engagement with the K-9. Due to still being armed and making threats, Officer York fired multiple shots. Fire rescue crews responded and pronounced Cody dead at the scene.
Neither Officer York nor this K-9 Loki were injured in the incident. Officer York has been with the St. Petersburg Police Department since 2017.
The Pinellas County Use of Deadly Force Investigative Taskforce is investigating the incident.
