Troopers continue to investigate a fatality crash that occurred on the Gandy Bridge at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2024.
Troopers say that a motorcyclist, a 33-year-old Tampa man, was traveling eastbound on the Gandy Bridge, approaching the Hillsborough County line at a very high speed.
The operator of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by a 48-year-old St. Petersburg man, was traveling eastbound on the bridge ahead of the motorcyclist.
Before reaching the county line, the rider overtook and collided with the rear of the Jeep. This resulted in the motorcycle traveling off the roadway, striking the concrete barrier, and being redirected back into the roadway, where both the rider and the motorcyclist tumbled for several hundred feet before coming to a final rest and bursting into flames.
The driver of the Jeep was able to come to a controlled stop in the inside eastbound lane of the bridge.
The motorcyclist suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash, while the driver of the Jeep was not injured during the incident.
