On May 28, 2024, at around 5:28 p.m., deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a missing swimmer at 13601 Gulf Boulevard in Madeira Beach.
Detectives reported that 51-year-old Anthony Angelo of Madeira Beach and his girlfriend, 37-year-old Christen Stretch, entered the water with floats. Stretch remained where she could touch the ocean floor, while Angelo proceeded about 50 yards further. Angelo began yelling for help and then disappeared under the water. Stretch ran to shore and called 911.
The United States Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Treasure Island Fire Department, Madeira Beach Fire Department and Seminole Fire Department assisted in the search.
At approximately 7:00 p.m., deputies from the Flight Unit spotted Angelo’s body in the water a short distance from the shore. Angelo was recovered and pronounced deceased at the scene.
Detectives stated that the incident does not appear suspicious.
Next of kin has been notified.
The investigation is ongoing.
