Detectives Arrest and Charge a 14-Year-Old with First-Degree Murder in Lealman Shooting

Deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Homicide & Robbery Unit have charged a 14-year-old suspect with first-degree murder following a shooting incident in Unincorporated St. Petersburg.

According to detectives, on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at approximately 10:52 a.m., deputies responded to the intersection of 27th Street North and 59th Avenue North.

The victim, 39-year-old Leslie Fernandez, was found lying in the roadway with apparent gunshot wounds to her upper body. Despite life-saving efforts, Fernandez was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Detectives identified the suspect as Jaevion Darrell Harvey, who was seen fleeing the area on his bicycle after the shooting. On July 26, 2024, detectives executed a search warrant at Harvey’s residence, where they discovered the firearm used in the incident.

Also located during the search were numerous other firearms, numerous rounds of ammunition, 3.8 kilograms of cocaine,  53 grams of crack cocaine, 3 grams of MDMA, and $184,964 in U.S. currency.

During questioning, Harvey confessed to randomly shooting Fernandez. He obtained the firearm from his father, 37-year-old Jarvis Spencer, whose criminal history includes 15 felony convictions.

Harvey faces one count of Murder in the First Degree and has been transported to the Pinellas Juvenile Assessment Center.

Spencer was uncooperative with detectives and was arrested and charged with seven counts of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, one count of Felon in Possession of Ammunition, one count of Possession of a Firearm with Altered Serial Number, one count of Armed Trafficking in Crack Cocaine, one count Armed Trafficking in Powder Cocaine, one count of Grand Theft Firearm, and was transported to the Pinellas County Jail. 

The investigation remains ongoing, and next of kin have been notified.
