Pinellas Park SWAT Response Leads to Safe Rescue of Two Hostages, Suspect Arrested

On Saturday, October 5, 2024, at approximately 2 PM, Pinellas Park Police responded to a domestic disturbance involving an armed suspect at a residence located at 9433 50th Way N. The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Russell Rippey of Pinellas Park, was inside the home with two female hostages, both of whom were unharmed.

Upon arrival, officers learned that Rippey was armed with an AR-15-style rifle and several handguns. The Pinellas Park Police Department activated its SWAT team, which quickly secured the area around the residence.

During the standoff, at approximately 3:45 p.m., the two hostages, identified as Paula Gordon, 48, Rippey’s girlfriend, and her friend Sharon Basart, 74, were able to safely exit the home without serious injury.

Rippey remained inside the residence but was eventually contacted by the department’s Tactical Surveillance team. After negotiations, he exited the home peacefully and was taken into custody without incident.

Investigators revealed that the domestic dispute began between Rippey and Gordon, leading Gordon to call a friend, Keith Thorbin, 62, for help. When Thorbim arrived at the home, he was forced inside by Rippey, who threatened him with the AR-15. During the altercation, Thorbim managed to escape and alert authorities.

At approximately 4 p.m., Rippey was tased during the apprehension and transported to a local hospital. He will be booked into the Pinellas County Jail and charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. Additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues. Police confirmed that the incident was isolated, and there was no threat to the public.

At least one of the victims was transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation.

Rippey was arrested on July 16, 2023, after colliding with a tow truck at 102nd Avenue and 66th Street. He was apprehended and taken into custody by Pinellas Park Police. Information can be found HERE
