Five boys, ages 12-15 face murder charges in hit and run crash that killed a 70-year old man in St. Petersburg

Five boys, ages 12 through 15, face charges in the hit-and-run crash that killed 70-year-old Edward Webb on Monday, October 21, 2024.

According to detectives, Webb was walking across 9th Avenue South, near his home, when a stolen Jeep SUV traveling northbound on 12th Street South turned onto 9th Avenue South and struck him.

The SUV driver fled the scene, but the SUV was later found abandoned a few blocks away.

On October 25th, investigators identified the 14-year-old driver of the stolen SUV and four passengers.

Working in conjunction with the Pinellas Pasco State Attorney’s Office, investigators charged the driver with murder in the third degree (felony murder), vehicular homicide leaving the scene, driving without a license causing death, and grand theft of motor vehicle.

The passengers, ages 12, 13, 14, and 15, are charged with murder in the third degree (felony murder) and grand theft of a motor vehicle. According to Florida law, felony murder is the killing of another human being during the commission or attempted commission of certain felonies, which includes grand theft of a motor vehicle.

The St. Petersburg Police Department has not released the name of the driver or the passengers.
