12-Year-Old dead in suspected accidental shooting at James Park Apartments in St. Petersburg

Police are investigating a shooting involving a 12-year-old boy at the James Park Apartments, located at 1050 3rd Avenue North. Authorities responded to the incident at approximately 6:20 pm on Monday, December 23, 2024.

Upon arrival, officers found 12-year-old Jeremiah D. Nelson suffering from a gunshot wound.

Upon arrival, officers located 12-year-old Jeremiah D. Nelson in the apartment with a gunshot wound. Nelson was transported to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital where he later tragically died.

Throughout the investigation, detectives determined that Nelson was playing with a gun he thought was unloaded when he accidentally shot himself. Detectives are trying to determine how the child obtained the gun.

This is an incredibly tragic event for both the community and Jeremiah’s family and friends. In light of this, it’s important to remember a few key safety tips for your children:

-Always treat guns as if they are loaded, even if you believe they are not.
-Never touch – an unattended firearm is less likely to cause harm.
-Reach out to a trusted adult – if a parent or guardian is unavailable, ask another responsible grown-up for help.
