Husband charged with attempted 1st-degree murder in brutal attack on his wife in Largo

Officers from the Largo Police Department are investigating a tragic domestic disturbance that occurred at 1789 Pine Cone Way at approximately 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday, December 25, 2024.

Authorities were dispatched to the scene following a 911 call. The caller, 78-year-old Jonathan McPhee, stated he killed his wife and was going to take his own life. He also texted a family member citing both financial and health issues as a reason. According to arrest documentation, he also texted, “I clubbed her, and I’m going to try to stab myself in the heart.”

Upon arrival, officers encountered Jonathan outside the home. He was injured with a self-inflicted knife wound. Inside the residence, officers located his wife, Lainy McPhee, with significant injuries.

The preliminary investigation suggests that Jonathan attacked her in the bed with a sledgehammer before injuring himself. Lainy’s injuries are described as severe and potentially life-threatening. The attack left her with a skull fracture and brain bleed. Both were transported to the Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital trauma center in St. Petersburg. As of Thursday morning, Largo Police say that both remain in critical condition.

According to neighbors, officers arrived at the home with guns drawn due to unknown circumstances. Neighbors described the McPhees as pleasant while describing the neighborhood as very quiet.

Late Christmas Day, Jonathan was charged with 1st Degree Attempted Murder.

Detectives remain at the scene to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. According to the Largo Police Department, there is no threat to the public. Further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
