St. Petersburg, FL – Detectives have arrested 65-year-old Delorse Boyd of St. Petersburg for financially exploiting an elderly victim, stealing approximately $205,762.60 over several years. Boyd faces a charge of 1st Degree Elderly Exploitation.
The victim, a disabled 79-year-old woman confined to a wheelchair, initially hired Boyd to clean her home. After the victim underwent surgery and required 24/7 home healthcare, Boyd transitioned to handling tasks such as grocery shopping, paying bills, and picking up medications. Boyd gained the victim’s trust, obtaining access to her credit cards and checkbook.
The exploitation occurred between July 7, 2017, and September 1, 2021, and was discovered by the victim’s bank when she was approximately 83 years old. Investigators determined Boyd wrote 176 fraudulent checks to withdraw cash, deposit funds into her account, and pay personal expenses. Additionally, Boyd misused the victim’s credit card for $20,045.58, covering costs such as appliances, utility bills, ride-share services, phone bills, online purchases, and travel expenses.
Among the fraudulent activities, Boyd used the victim’s account to write a $3,517.02 check to the Pinellas County Clerk of Court to pay her own traffic tickets and criminal fines.
St. Petersburg Economic Crimes detectives emphasized the importance of protecting oneself and family members from financial exploitation. They offer the following tips:
• Carefully select and appoint a Power of Attorney.
