On Saturday, Aug. 30, at approximately 4:45 p.m., the Tampa Police Department’s 911 call center received a report of a possible armed individual inside the USF Library on the Tampa campus. The caller also claimed to have heard shots fired. Only one call came into TPD and through a verification process, it showed characteristics of a swatting call.
Tampa’s 911 operator immediately notified the USF Police Department and dispatched units to assist. USFPD officers responded to the library and arrived within two minutes of receiving the call. Upon entering the building, officers confirmed there was no threat to students, faculty or staff.
With support from the Tampa Police Department, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and the Temple Terrace Police Department, out of an abundance of caution the library was evacuated and thoroughly searched. Officers also canvassed the surrounding area and determined it was clear of any threats.
The incident appears to have been a hoax call, possibly involving a swatting tactic. At no time was there an active threat to the USF campus or community. This investigation remains ongoing.
