Arrest Made in Fatal Hit-and-Run at Publix on 37th Avenue North

St. Petersburg Police have arrested 85-year-old Darrell Elwin Briggs in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that occurred shortly before 5 p.m. in the Publix parking lot at 200 37th Avenue North.

Investigators say a woman in her 80s was struck by a car in the lot. She was transported to the hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Briggs, the driver, left the scene and drove to his home at a nearby apartment complex. Detectives later located the vehicle and took him into custody.

Briggs is charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death. The investigation remains ongoing.
