Tuesday Morning Pedestrian Crash Turns Fatal in St. Petersburg

A pedestrian who was critically injured Tuesday while attempting to cross 22nd Avenue South near 49th Street South has died.

Shortly after 9 a.m. on Feb. 3, 44-year-old Robert Smith of St. Petersburg was walking between vehicles stopped at a traffic signal in the 4800 block of 22nd Avenue South. Smith was not crossing at a marked crosswalk.

A gray Jeep traveling west on 22nd Avenue South struck Smith. The driver stopped immediately and remained at the scene.

Smith was transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He died at the hospital Tuesday night.

His family has been notified and the investigation remains open.
