A Clearwater man was arrested following a crash that investigators say was caused by an illegal turn and involved signs of impairment, according to an arrest affidavit.
According to the affidavit, the incident occurred on April 4, 2026, at approximately 10:10 p.m. at the intersection of Court Street and Highland Avenue in Clearwater.
Investigators say 74-year-old Delbert Leon McBride was involved in a two-vehicle crash after failing to obey a posted traffic control device prohibiting a left turn at the intersection. The violation caused his vehicle to be struck by eastbound traffic, resulting in the vehicle overturning onto its roof.Â

McBride was transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg, where he was evaluated and cleared by medical staff.Â
According to the affidavit, McBride refused to provide a blood sample after being read implied consent. Deputies also reported indicators of impairment, including a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage, bloodshot and glassy eyes, and unsteady balance.Â
Authorities state McBride also refused to perform field sobriety tests after a partial evaluation.
He was charged with misdemeanor DUI involving property damage with refusal.
McBride was arrested at approximately 11:26 p.m. on April 4, 2026.
