A multiple-alarm structure fire significantly damaged a marine science laboratory, with officials indicating the building is likely a total loss due to extensive water and fire damage.

The fire was reported at approximately 5:12 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

Fire crews reported that the structure was already heavily involved in the attic upon arrival. Due to conditions inside the building, personnel have not re-entered, limiting the ability to fully assess the interior.

Officials said the lab contained various hazardous materials, including compressed gas cylinders and chemicals typically used in a marine science setting. Crews prevented the fire from reaching most of the gas cylinders and removed several from the exterior of the building as a precaution.

A hazardous materials (hazmat) team is expected to conduct a detailed assessment once the fire is fully extinguished. That process will include reviewing material safety data sheets (MSDS) and physically inspecting the lab for potential chemical leaks or other hazards.

“There are a lot of different chemicals inside, and while we’ve confirmed what should be there through documentation, we have not yet visually confirmed their condition or tested for any leaks,” officials said.

No injuries were reported. Fire crews conducted an initial search of the building and confirmed through employee rosters that all individuals were accounted for.

Emergency personnel expect to remain on scene through the night and into the early morning hours. Cleanup and hazard mitigation efforts are anticipated to be extensive, and building maintenance crews will not have access until at least the morning.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Officials confirmed the incident was limited to the science lab and did not impact nearby facilities, including the university’s ocean research building. Classes are expected to continue as scheduled.
