Driver Killed in Head-On Crash in St. Petersburg

A 72-year-old man was killed early Thursday morning following a head-on collision in St. Petersburg.

According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 1:37 a.m. at the intersection of 5th Avenue North and Lafayette Street North.

Investigators say a pickup truck traveling eastbound on 5th Avenue North crossed into the westbound lanes for unknown reasons and collided head-on with a van.

The driver of the pickup truck, Charles Peter Caravana, 72, died at the scene. Police said his next of kin has been notified.

The driver of the van, a 67-year-old woman, suffered injuries and was transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital. She is reported to be in stable condition.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and investigators have not yet released what caused the pickup truck to cross into oncoming traffic.
