Pedestrian Killed After Being Struck by Four Vehicles on I-275; Driver Arrested After Leaving Scene

A 39-year-old St. Petersburg man was killed Wednesday night after being struck by four vehicles while walking in a travel lane of Interstate 275, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 9 p.m. on September 2, 2026, on southbound I-275 south of 54th Avenue N.

According to FHP, four vehicles were traveling southbound in the inside lane in succession when they encountered the pedestrian walking in the inside travel lane. Troopers said the man was in the path of the approaching vehicles for an unknown reason.

The pedestrian was struck by all four vehicles and suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The drivers of the four vehicles were not injured.

FHP identified the driver of the first vehicle, an Infiniti QX60, as 29-year-old Howard Lee Lockett III of St. Petersburg. Troopers said Lockett fled the scene following the crash but was later returned to the scene by a family member.

Lockett was arrested by FHP and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death. The Infiniti was later located by the St. Petersburg Police Department.

The other vehicles involved were a BMW 320i driven by a 22-year-old St. Petersburg woman, a Toyota Corolla driven by a 20-year-old Tampa woman, and an Infiniti G37 driven by a 23-year-old St. Petersburg man.

The circumstances surrounding why the pedestrian was walking in the travel lane remain under investigation.
