The Florida Highway Patrol and the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office are investigating an incident that occurred at approximately 7:26 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2019.
According to troopers, a 2000 Dodge Dakota was traveling eastbound on SR-54 approaching the intersection of Bruce B. Downs Blvd.
A motorcyclist, 26 year-old Angel Fiallos of Wesley Chapel, was operating a 2016 Harley Davidson XL1200 and was stopped for a red traffic signal in the southbound lane of the driveway access to Walgreens, located at 28115 SR-54.
Two other vehicles were were stopped for a red traffic signal in the outside and inside left turn lanes of SR-54.
As the driver of the Dakota approached the intersection, the traffic signal changed. Fiallos began to travel southbound through the intersection as the driver of the Dakota ran the red signal.
The Dakota collided with the motorcycle, continued through the intersection, and struck two other vehicles.
Following the crash, the while male and female occupants of the Dakota fled the scene of the crash on foot. They both ran across the highway to a Wawa gas station, located at 28225 SR-54, engaged in a physical confrontation with a motorist in the parking lot, and carjacked their vehicle described as a green 2002 Saturn 2-door.
The couple then fled the Wawa traveling eastbound on SR-54.
Transported to an area hospital, Fiallos later expired from injuries sustained during the crash. The crash closed several lanes of SR-54 and portions of the intersection for several hours.
This afternoon, Pasco County Deputies located the carjacked vehicle and entered a pursuit with the suspect. The pursuit terminated near the 6600 block of Knights Griffin Road in Hillsborough County and the vehicle was recovered.
The female passenger, Breanna Lynn Wright, 23 of Dade City, was taken into custody and the suspect driver, Cody Sterling Bearry, fled the scene on foot.
Hillsborough and Pasco Sheriff’s deputies located Bearry in the multi-hour search.
Bearry, age 31 of Wesley Chapel, was apprehended after a search that went through woods and through a canal.
Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office K9 units had been tracking the suspect.
Bearry is now considered the suspect in the fatal crash, as well as the carjacking.
No other serious injuries were reported in the crash.
The Pasco Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the carjacking incident as the FHP continues to investigate the fatal hit and run crash.
