Crash Results in Two Overturned Vehicles in Pinellas Park
July 25, 2014
At approximately 6:30pm on Thursday, July 24th, multiple first responders were dispatched to a vehicle crash on Park Blvd. The crash resulted in two vehicles being overturned. Pinellas Park Police has provided some information into the crash.
A 2011 Nissan Truck was traveling in westbound in the 6000 block of Park Blvd. in the center lane while a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta, was travelling west in the 6000 block of Park Blvd in the median lane.
Due to roadway construction the pavement on in the median lane had been removed which created a 1″ lip between the median and center lanes.
While the driver of the Jetta changed lanes from the median to the center, the front right tire failed and resulted in a blow out. It then traveled 218 feet and went from the median lane to the sidewalk on the north side of Park Blvd. It continued to travel 255 feet on the sidewalk with the right half of the car on the sidewalk and the left half of the car in the curb lane of Park Blvd. While on the sidewalk, the Jetta struck a PSTA bus stop sign breaking the pole at the base. When the Jetta reached the driveway of 6035 Park Blvd., it swerved left into the curb lane and the left half of the vehicle went into the center lane. At that time, the front of the Jetta struck the right rear of Nissan Truck.
The NIssan then veered left and fish tailed, bringing the back of the vehicle to the median lane. The NIssan was now sideways with the driver’s side door facing west and then rolled onto the driver’s side and then onto its roof continuing to spin; the vehicle was traveling west. It then left the roadway and went into the grass area of 6051 Park Blvd. where it hit a fixed sign.
After the Jetta struck the rear of the Nissan, the right front rim dug into the roadway and rolled onto the passenger side of the vehicle then rolled onto its roof. The vehicle came to a stop in the curb lane of Park Blvd.
Injuries were reported and the severity was minimal. Investigators believe that seat belts and airbags prevented more serious injuries.
The driver of the Jetta was issued a citation for careless driving.
Independent witnesses told investigators that the vehicle was driving at a high rate of speed just before the crash.
