Deputies say driver admits to smoking cannabis and drinking before causing a collision, injuring deputy and officer

On Sunday, April 30, 2023, at approximately 9:12 p.m., fire rescue personnel received a report of a three-vehicle crash involving two law enforcement vehicles at the intersection of 67th Street and 54th Avenue N in Unincorporated St. Petersburg.

As per the arrest affidavit, 34-year-old Corey Brown from Largo failed to yield to multiple emergency vehicles at the intersection, leading to a collision with a marked Kenneth City police cruiser. The police cruiser then collided with a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office cruiser, causing both vehicles to slide from the point of impact and injuring an officer and a deputy.

According to the deputy’s report, Brown refused to take a breath and blood test and displayed symptoms of impairment, including unsteady balance, bloodshot eyes, and constricted pupils. Brown was also unable to perform the roadside field sobriety tests as instructed.

Brown reportedly admitted to smoking cannabis and having only two drinks at a nightclub in St. Petersburg. During questioning, he became verbally uncooperative and made threatening statements toward the deputy.

As a result of the incident, Brown was charged with two counts of DUI with property damage/personal injury and taken to Pinellas County Jail.
