TAMPA, Fla. (February 13, 2025) — The Tampa Police Department arrested a 72-year-old man in a case of aggravated animal cruelty that resulted in the death of a pet.

On February 12, 2025, at approximately 9 p.m., a witness observed the suspect operating a green Ford truck with a dog tied to the rear of the vehicle by a leash on the 4200 block of W. Kennedy.

Tampa Police officers responded to the scene and found the dog with evidence of severe trauma.

The investigation revealed that the suspect drove for approximately one mile with the dog dragging behind. Surveillance video showed the dog coming loose from the leash due to the force of the turn into a bank’s parking lot.

Once parked, the suspect used the ATM and then fled the scene, leaving the severely injured dog behind.

Hillsborough County Animal Services arrived on the scene and transported the dog to a veterinary facility for emergency treatment, where it later died due to its injuries.

Johnnie Davis, age 72, was positively identified as the individual responsible for this cruel act. On February 13, 2025, officers arrest Davis at his residence. He was charged with Aggravated Cruelty to Animals and transported to Orient Road Jail.

“The cruelty inflicted on this helpless animal is both heartbreaking and unacceptable,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “Our officers acted swiftly to ensure this criminal was identified and taken into custody. We will continue to seek justice for innocent lives and hold those responsible accountable.”

This is an active investigation; any additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
