TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. – Emergency crews responded shortly after midnight on June 12 to a 911 call reporting a person yelling for help near the east side of the Treasure Island Causeway bascule bridge.
Treasure Island Fire Rescue, Treasure Island Police Department, and mutual aid units from surrounding agencies responded. A rescue boat from St. Pete Beach Fire Rescue located an adult male in the water with a head injury.
The man was rescued, treated at the scene by St. Petersburg Fire Rescue paramedics, and transported by Sunstar to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg. His injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening.
According to preliminary information, the individual approached the closed bridge—undergoing overnight repairs—to observe the work and fell approximately 20 feet into the water.
Bridge maintenance crews were inside the main operations area and did not witness the fall.
The Treasure Island Causeway Bridge was temporarily closed for repairs from at 10 p.m. last night until 6 a.m. this morning.
