Shortly after 7 a.m. on Friday, July 5, 2024, a red Dodge Journey struck a bicyclist at 16th Street North and 5th Avenue. The bicyclist later died at a local hospital.
According to the preliminary investigation, the Dodge was traveling eastbound on 5th Avenue North with a green light and attempted to turn south onto 16th Street North.
At the same time, the bicyclist, identified as Juan Yhanes, age 83, of St. Petersburg, was crossing 16th Street North from east to west in a marked crosswalk with the right of way.
The Dodge driver failed to yield and struck the bicycle. Yhanes was not wearing a helmet at the time.
He was transported by ambulance to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Next of kin were notified.
The driver of the Dodge remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation.
The investigation is ongoing.
