Fatal DUI Crash in St. Petersburg Leads to Arrest

ST. PETERSBURG – A Petersburg man has been arrested following a fatal DUI crash on Wednesday evening, September 24, 2025.

According to investigators, 40-year-old Brett McClelland was driving a white Subaru Outback westbound on the 7800 block of 38th Avenue North at approximately 6:30 p.m. when he crossed into oncoming traffic.

McClelland’s vehicle struck an eastbound black Toyota sedan head-on. The driver of the Toyota sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local trauma center.

The passenger in the Toyota, identified as 89-year-old Angel Shihate, was transported to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

McClelland was also treated for injuries. Investigators determined he was under the influence at the time of the crash. He was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter and DUI causing serious bodily injury.

He was booked into the Pinellas County Jail early Thursday morning and his booking photo is not yet available.

McClelland was previously arrested in Clearwater for DUI in 2021.

The crash remains under investigation.
