The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) continues to investigate a fatal crash on I-275 just south of Gandy Boulevard.
The crash occurred shortly after 10 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18, 2021
According to troopers, the 26 year-old male driver of a vehicle was traveling southbound on I-275 near Milepost 28 at a high speed.
The driver of a second vehicle, a 25 year-old male St. Petersburg resident, was traveling southbound on I-275 ahead of the first vehicle. The first vehicle overtook and collided with the rear of the second vehicle. Following the impact, both vehicles departed the roadway and entered the outside shoulder.
Once on the shoulder, the first vehicle collided with a light pole and then a tree before erupting in flames. The 26 year-old Tampa resident suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash. The passenger of the vehicle is only being identified as a 22 year-old male from Tampa. Troopers say that passenger suffered serious injuries.
The driver of the second vehicle was treated for minor injuries.
FHP, citing Marsy’s Law, no longer will identify subjects involved in crashes or provide makes or models of the vehicles involved.
