Arrest made in fatal traffic crash at 1st Avenue South and 51st Street South in St. Petersburg

At 10:02 a.m. on September 11, 2024, a fatal crash occurred at the intersection of 1st Avenue South and 51st Street involving a silver Infinity Q6, driven by 22-year-old Charles Williams IV and a white Ford Ranger. The collision caused both vehicles to leave the road, resulting in 52-year-old Corey Koeppen being ejected from his vehicle.

Koeppen was pronounced dead at the scene. Williams was also transported to Orlando Health Bayfront with serious injuries 
and was later released. 

Investigators determined that Williams was racing a black SUV while driving on a designated bus lane when he crashed into Koeppen

On Wednesday, September 18, 2024, Charles Williams IV was arrested and charged with Vehicular Homicide for the death of Corey Koeppen. No booking photo is available at this time.

Investigators are seeking help in identifying the black SUV in the video. Anyone with information is asked to call 727-893-7780 or to remain anonymous,  text “SPPD + your tip” to TIP411.

The eastbound lanes of 1st Avenue South, as well as the northbound and southbound lanes of 51st Street South, were closed for more than five hours as authorities conducted their investigation.

The investigation is ongoing.
