Clearwater Police responded to a crash killing two motorcyclists shortly after 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 8, 2023. The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of the Courtney Campbell Causeway in Clearwater.
According to investigators, both motorcyclists were traveling east at a high speed when one motorcyclist slammed into the rear of an eastbound Hyundai Sonata in the median lane while traveling at the speed limit. The impact sent the Hyundai into the curb lane, colliding with the other motorcyclist.
One motorcyclist, a 51-year-old male from Tampa, died at the scene. The other motorcyclist, a 26-year-old male from Valrico, died after being flown to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa.
The female driver of the Hyundai was not injured.
During the investigation, the crash closed all eastbound lanes on the Courtney Campbell Causeway for nearly four hours. The westbound lanes were closed until 4 p.m., allowing Bayflite to land and take off to transport the injured man to the hospital.
