At approximately 10:15 p.m. on Sunday, July 9, 2023, authorities received reports of smoke emanating from a residential property located at 10422 116th Avenue North in Unincorporated Largo.
Firefighters from Seminole Fire Rescue Engine 32 arrived on-scene and actively engaged in combating the fire engulfing the structure. They were soon joined by Largo Fire Rescue and deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Upon arrival, detectives discovered that the fire department had forcibly entered the residence through the front door. Inside, they found Thomas James Shook, a 59-year-old individual, lying on the floor. Shook was immediately transported to the hospital, but unfortunately, he was later pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the incident is being carried out by detectives from the Robbery/Homicide Unit and the Burglary/Pawn (Arson) Unit. Currently, there are no apparent signs of suspicious activity associated with the fire.
To ascertain the cause and manner of Thomas Shook’s death, the Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy.
The investigation remains ongoing.
