LARGO, FL – The City of Largo announced that Matthew “Matt” Carpenter has been appointed as the next Fire Chief for Largo Fire Rescue.
Chief Carpenter, a trusted fire service professional with over 25 years of progressive leadership experience, has served as Largo’s Deputy Fire Chief since 2021 and has been a member of Team Largo for more than seven years. During his tenure, he has overseen the department’s daily operations, implemented innovative service delivery models, enhanced emergency response capabilities, and strengthened labor-management relationships through successful collective bargaining agreements.
“Matt brings a proven track record of operational excellence, community engagement, and forward-thinking leadership,” said City Manager John Curp. “We are confident in his ability to guide Largo Fire Rescue into the future while continuing to provide the highest level of service to our community.”
Chief Carpenter’s career also includes leadership roles with Osceola County Fire Rescue and EMS, Pinellas Suncoast Fire & Rescue District, and other Florida fire service agencies. His extensive expertise spans strategic planning, fiscal management, emergency operations, and leadership development.
Chief Carpenter holds a Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership from Waldorf University, a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Administration from Columbia Southern University, and multiple advanced certifications, including Fire Officer III and All-Hazards Incident Commander.
