The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man following an incident reported during a Lyft ride.
According to investigators, the incident occurred on October 8, 2025. The victim reported that after being picked up by her Lyft driver, Joaquin Mena Vazquez, 27, the driver pulled the vehicle into a grassy area while en route to her destination and placed it in park.
Deputies say Mena Vazquez then moved into the back seat, choked the victim, and threatened to kill her. The victim was able to convince him to stop, allowing her to exit the vehicle.
During the investigation, Lyft records revealed two prior complaints of inappropriate conduct involving Mena Vazquez during previous rides. Those incidents are now under investigation.
“This victim simply wanted to get home safely, and instead, she was met with violence and fear for her life. This kind of predatory behavior will not be ignored,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “I commend the victim for coming forward. Her courage may have stopped this suspect from harming someone else. Predators who target innocent people have no place in our community.”
On January 29, 2026, Mena Vazquez was arrested without incident. He is facing the following charges:
- Battery by Strangulation
- False Imprisonment
The investigation remains active.
