Darryl Grant, age 39, of St. Petersburg, was arrested after a high-speed chase that began in Tampa and ended with a precision immobilization technique (PIT) by law enforcement on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at approximately 2:30 a.m.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the incident began when Grant fled Tampa Police Department units and was monitored by their aviation unit. At approximately 2:32 a.m., Grant was observed driving a 2025 BMW westbound on 116th Avenue North, near Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street.
An FHP trooper positioned a fully-marked Dodge Charger in front of Grant’s vehicle with emergency lights and sirens activated. Grant accelerated around the trooper’s vehicle, colliding with it and causing approximately $2,000 in damage. Grant continued to flee westbound before turning south onto Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
The pursuit ended when a PIT maneuver forced Grant’s vehicle to stop. Despite verbal commands from the officer, Grant exited the car and attempted to walk away but was taken into custody.
Grant was positively identified through his Florida ID card. A records check revealed that his driver’s license had been suspended since January 17, 2023, and he had prior convictions for similar offenses in 2012 and 2024.
The defendant is facing charges related to fleeing and eluding law enforcement, leaving the scene of a crash, resisting an officer, reckless driving, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and operating a vehicle with a suspended license.
Additional charges are possible out of Hillsborough County.
