Man Arrested After Hit And Run Crash In Kenneth City

A Kenneth City man has been arrested after his involvement in a hit and run crash this afternoon in Kenneth City.  The crash resulted in the death of 19 year-old Sean Patrick McCasland.

The crash occurred at about 10:50 AM on Sunday, May 29, 2016 at 49th Avenue N and 61st Lane in Kenneth City.

Deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Major Accident Investigation Team have arrested 20 year-old Tyler M. Johnson who was determined to be the driver of the 1990 Ford F-250 pick-up truck.

According to investigators, McCasland had an altercation with Johnson in front of McCasland’s residence. At one point during the altercation, McCasland jumped onto the truck and the driver of the truck tried driving away.

Witnesses told investigators that McCasland was seen hanging off the driver side door of the truck as the truck drove northbound on 61st Way North and then made a left westbound turn onto 49th Avenue North.

Investigators reports that witnesses stated that McCasland fell off the truck onto the roadway near 61st Lane North and the truck stopped. The driver of the truck then proceeded to drove off running over the victim with the left rear tires of the truck.

The truck continued westbound on 49th Avenue North and left the scene.

McCasland was transported to a St. Petersburg General Hospital for life threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Through various investigative techniques, investigators were able to identify, 20-year-old Tyler Johnson, as the owner and driver of the Ford truck. Detectives arrested Johnson about 8:20 PM after locating him and the truck.

Johnson was arrested late Sunday evening and transported to the Pinellas County Jail without incident. Johnson was charged with Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Death.

McCasland’s next of kin has been notified.

The investigation continues.
