Man Arrested with Gun at Seminole High School Friday Night

Posted: September 12, 2015 – 11:35 AM

A man was arrested on the campus of Seminole High School at approximately 8:50 PM on Friday, September 11, 2015 during the football game.  The man has been identified as 28 year-old Matthew Caulfield of Orlando, FL.  Seminole High School is located at 8401 131st Street in Seminole, Florida.

In a press release by Cpl Spencer Gross, PIO of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office,  a group of Seminole High School students were gathered in the parking lot during the home football game when they were confronted by Mr. Caulfield.

Deputies say that Caulfield was exchanging words with and provoking the students. Seminole High School teacher, Joshua Walker, who was nearby overheard the argument and confronted Caulfield.  Witnesses say that Caulfield threatened Walker, telling him he would shoot him and displayed a handgun that was tucked in his pants.

School Resource Deputies who were already at the school working the football game responded immediately and took Caulfield into custody. Caulfield was found to be in possession of a .40 caliber handgun.

Deputies say that Caulfield was not known to the victim or the students, however; it appears that alcohol may have been a factor.

Caulfield was arrested and transported to the Pinellas County Jail.  Neither the teacher nor the students were injured during the incident.

Caulfield was charged with Aggravated Assault on a School Board Employee, Possession of a Firearm at a School Sponsored Event, Carrying a Concealed Firearm, and Trespass On School Grounds.  He is being held in the Pinellas County Jail on $40,000 bond.  All charges are classified as a felony.

The investigation continues.
