Man Fatally Stabbed Outside Ahi Sushi in Downtown St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG — A man died after being stabbed during an altercation outside Ahi Sushi, located at 364 1st Avenue North, at approximately 5:48 p.m. on Friday, May 23, 2025.

The wounded man, identified as Dustin Hedenberg, 40, was transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital, where he died. His next of kin has been notified.

According to police, the investigation revealed that Hedenberg was acting erratically and had punched an individual at the Scientology Center at 336 1st Avenue North shortly before the stabbing incident.

Hedenberg then went to Ahi Sushi, where he became involved in a heated confrontation with the business owner, Fayun Zhang, 50. Police say Hedenberg struck Zhang, knocked him to the ground, and continued to punch him.

During the struggle, Zhang reportedly grabbed a screwdriver and stabbed Hedenberg in the face.

Zhang has not been charged. As the investigation continues, detectives will consult with the State Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges are warranted.

First Avenue North was closed between 3rd and 4th Streets.
